These will be based on one primary source document of your choosing from Chapters 1-2 found in the documents reader, For the Record, that came as a companion to the textbook. (A primary source is something generated at or near the time of the event under examination.) The primary source document will be followed by Review Questions. Use those questions to guide your prose/essay response. Do not simply respond with bulleted or numbered answers. Again, the expectation for this assignment is college level analysis and writing. Make sure you have all the appropriate citations and a works cited. Include an accurate word count at the end of the essay that does NOT include footnotes or works cited. BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS
Bartolome De Las Casas believed that Indians were not brutal, ignorant, or even inhuman. He argues that before the introduction of Spaniards, Indians had a civilized harmony, well-organized religion, law, and customs. Indians lived in big cities in peace with each other with admirable administration of law. Being an activist of religion, he recommended the Indians to be taught the catholic faith and the holy sacraments to increase togetherness and promote peace and harmony. Ideally, he believed that Indians were teachable, talented, and easy to acquire new skills as they honored and observed religious teachings.
He strongly condemned the brutality among the Indians, which saw him give up slavery and abhorred the activities of Spaniards. In exchange for protection and evangelizing, the Indians functioned as serfs and gave the Spaniards tribute in gold, kind, or labor. Many Spaniard missionaries dispatched to the New World, notably Las Casas, observed and criticized the Spaniard's cruel exploitation of Indians and their lack of evangelizing commitment. Las Casas aimed to alter the techniques of Spanish conquest, believing that Spaniards and indigenous peoples might work together to establish a new civilization in America.
He believed that the Indian people were not difficult to convert if treated fairly and not subjected to the beatings and torture of slavery. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, Indians had beneficial laws and customs that held them together in solidarity and were considered to be just and equitable (Emory David & Mayer, 4). He debated that as the Spaniards were fighting the Romans and so were the Indians fighting them. He defended the Indians that they were defending their freedom and dignity from the Spaniards' torture and barbaric acts. He argued that if the Spaniards were subjected to slavery, deprived of their liberty, and their leader stripped off the authority would also have defied defend themselves with every ooze of their life.
