Antiwar Sentiments in the Union and Confederacy
Right from the first firing on Fort Sumter to signal the beginning of the American Civil war, numerous individuals, groups, civil rights movements, and a good number of the Confederacy and the Union regions dissented the armed conflict. Public opinion was highly divided from both sides on how the war should be handled or whether it was necessary to wage it in the first place. The pre-war perceptions of federal and state powers, civil rights, socioeconomic associations, and individual concerns for safety, freedom, and survival during the conflict fashioned rhetoric and goals of the antiwar sentiments. Confronted with what they deemed immoral, unjust, and unconstitutional policies by Lincoln's government in Washington, D.C., and the Davis administration in Richmond, opposers, vented their defiance to the war via grassroots actions. The actions were primarily through riots and disorders, judicial challenges, deserting, and political activism.
The antiwar sentiments were so rife across the two factions that rebellion manifested itself actively and passively in different ways. In all its sincerity, it can be said that a few people participated in the actual combat, albeit a large number of the population was indirectly or directly affected. The justifications that influenced a majority to contest the war were complex and varied. To some, the conflict's outcome was an issue of indifference. In contrast, others secretly or openly supported the other group but did not travel south or north to enlist as soldiers. It was a personal conviction for many people, and they dissented in the ways they knew best.
