The 1905 manifesto and the 1908 preamble majorly define the new struggles in the labor market instead of social relations and groupings. The central theme depicted is how machines displace human skills and the increasing capitalist power. The capitalist was majorly increased through concentration in possession of the necessary tool for production. Samuel Gompers and his American Federation of Labor would agree on distributing the production tools evenly without discrimination and disagree on capitalists taking over everything. The historical significance of this idea is that it provides a framework for negotiating better working terms.

The period between the 1870s to 1920s was characterized by radical transformation, labor struggles and unrest, and economic uncertainty in the United States, especially for the workers. After the civil war, industrialism started to expand in the United States. However, this growth in industrialism did not only lead to the creation of new jobs but also new problems. The period was also marked by depression that forced some companies to close, sending many workers to unemployment (Clark 31). Disputes between labor providers and management of various factories also escalated to unprecedented levels. During this time, immigration was continuing in large and shocking numbers. The numbers were majorly from eastern and southern Europe and Africa. There was also the massive movement of African Americans from South to North America. This had a significant effect in altering the workforce makeup in the United States. The struggle by the African Americans during these tumultuous years led to the growth of many initiatives. Some of those initiatives have continued today, and they include good benefits to workers, improvement in working conditions, vacations, and reasonable working hours, among others.
