Introduction
Emancipation proclamation of 1863 was issued as an executive order by President Abraham Lincoln as a declaration that all blacks held as slaves became free henceforth. This proclamation stands as one of the most important documents in the history of the united states. The document brought a new narrative in the war against slavery and inequality and by the end of the civil war, nearly 4 million salves were already free with more than 360,000 of them in the north Carolina region. It marked a new era for African Americans who had suffered the dire consequences of slavery for the longest time.
Emancipation Promoted Black equality
In 1862, president Lincoln issued a preliminary emancipation proclamation that stipulated the southern states to cease their rebellion or have the emancipation proclamation go into effect by January 1863. The failed to comply and the emancipation proclamation came into full effect in January 1st, 1863. With the implementation of this executive order, the focus of war changed. Until 1862, the focus of the war was mainly about preserving the union but with the 1863 emancipation proclamation, the war made the freedom of slaves as one of the legitimate issues. The order made the eradication of slavery a goal alongside the goal of uniting America (Broomall, 2020).
