It is a philosophical and religious tradition whereby the individual follows a belief that complements and offsets the duty-conscious, determined and serious character that is attributed to Confucianism. Daoism entails an optimistic attitude towards the philosophical and occult, while for Confucians these issues are of no importance even though they agree that they exist.
Daoism has been influential in the progress of China. Buddhism was a development from Daoism, and it has also been linked with alchemy, martial arts, and movements. In fundamental concepts of Buddhism which comprise the illusionary attribute of the physical world and absence of individual ego is in opposition to Daoism. It applies to the state since it guides how the ruler should behave and acceptable actions. Daoism is meant for rulers since it guides their behaviors.
