Fashion Photo Essay
Georg Simmel asserts that two primary social tendencies that are essential in establishing fashion. The first is the need for union, and the other is the need for isolation. People must desire to be part of the bigger society, and they ought to have the desire to be considered as individuals (Barnard 12). As such, fashion brings people together and, at the same time, can isolate them, particularly through social classes.
The above is an Afternoon silk dress, ca. 1877 (The Met). Indeed, it can be considered fashion since it has a unique design and was meant for a specific class of people. The afternoon dress is intended to be worn in the afternoon, as its name suggests. The dress represents the affluent class of people. In other words, it is for high-income earners based on its unique features that are absent in normal attire. The garment should be marketed to middle and high-income earners. In particular, wearing it makes a person to be perceived as wealthy. The black and shape stand out and are significant to its design.
Mrs. Arnold, an American, came up with the above dress design. She called it a Dinner dress, ca. 1895 (The Met). The material used to make the dress is silk. The dress is fashionable. Simmel depicts that fashionable clothing is usually used in the west capitalist societies to show membership to specific cultural or social groups (Barnard 12). Moreover, it gives individuals their identity. Besides, the Dinner dress above is for the wealthy class of individuals. That is why it should be marketed from the upper-middle and high-class people to signify belongingness to a high social status. The black color and its shape are outstanding, particularly the unique design at the chest area.
Morin Blossier’s Riding jacket is fashion (The Met). The dress shows belongingness to a specific group of people, which is royal. In other terms, it signifies a high social class and powerful individuals. For this reason, it should be marketed to wealthy politicians or other powerful people who have more wealth. The combination of black and white colors makes it outstanding. In addition, its shape and fabric mean that those who wear it are individuals who should be treated in a special way.
Junya Watanabe is a Japanese jacket. The leather jacket is fashionable. Specifically, it shows a strong affiliation to the middle-income group. These are people who wear clothes that do not make them unique. As such, it belongs to the average class of people. On that note, this leather jacket should be marketed to middle-income earners. The leather material and black color make its unique design outstanding.
