Living in a land different from one’s origins makes a person an alien in a land one thinks is his own. Although I grew up in this country throughout my life, I have constantly battled with left-and-right ridicules, especially from those born and raised as a White, compared to myself, who they think is just a mixed-race nobody. Therefore, the main problem in this country is racism, and this must be fought by people like me through developing values essential for one’s success.
The primary source of ridicule from others was my appearance, precisely, the color of my skin. However, some other values and events were frequently noticed and branded as different by many Whites. First, as a Filipino-American, my parents have always stressed the significance of a family. Although they value independence, they do not practice it the way we do in this country, and my parents also decided to follow that kind of Filipino value. Second, my parents were religious and devotees due to the influence of the Filipino culture. I have adapted the way my parents prayed and acted towards others. As a result, I was constantly mocked for having strong beliefs. Last and most importantly, conservativeness was the major problem that I have encountered, mainly because my parents are strict, but they follow the Filipino culture from dressing down to the manners on the table.
These factors are different from others, but to our family, these are nothing but extraordinary. The factors that others despise make Filipino-Americans unique in their own way. Our mixed values demonstrate the significance of diversity and how one must cope with changes to blend in an unaccepting world like this land.
