In 1964, the American Music industry experienced a significant tremble by British brands. It came to be known as the "British invasion" and was led by various bands, including The Beatles, the Kinks, the Searchers, the Dave Clark Five, Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, and many others. But before the invasion, the American music industry was dominated by folk music. Around the 1960s, folk music collided with rock music and gave birth to the folk-Rock subgenre. The notable figure in the fusion of folk music and rock music was Roger McGuinn, the leader of The Byrds.
As a teenager, I would have been in a dilemma to choose between pop and garage rock or folk and folk-rock music. I would have aligned myself with garage Rock music as an ideal preference for an American teenager around 1966. The aspects that would have influenced my decision to prefer garage rock include the occasion's structure, style, originality, and suitability.
The American origin facets of the garage rock would have made me align myself to it. Most American teens didn't know that most garage music sounds weren't from Britain. For instance, American folk musicians notably Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie and Josh White influenced a United Kingdom rock and roll sound known as Skiffle.
