In the Mood for Love
The movie “In the Mood for Love” by Wong Kar-wai (2000) presented a central argument about engaging in forbidden love with another person because of the loneliness from an unreciprocated love of a partner. Throughout the movie, the main characters are emphasized to portray their loneliness when it comes to their unfulfilled desire for affection from their loved ones. Most of the time, the spouses of the two main characters are always on a business trip that sets a limiting barrier with their relationships. The movie also presented the effects of loneliness to a person to ease the pain of having a long-distance relationship. It should that a lonely person would seek refuge or affection from someone around their immediate proximity. The main characters tried to counter the effects of loneliness by having a platonic relationship with each other. Although the main characters' perception shows the effects of loneliness because of being left alone by their spouses, their spouses’ cheating with another person is another end of the spectrum where they show the effects of loneliness because of being away. In the preface to “Wong Kar-wai” by Peter Brunette argued that the movies of Wong Kar-wai are attractive because of his artistic portrayal of the mysterious nature of everyday life using stunning visuals and music which transcends the status quo of contemporary cinema during his time (Brunette xvi). Loneliness is related to the mysteries of everyday life since it is a subjective feeling where each person can have different experiences. Although loneliness is well-known to everyone, its effects on a person are very complex which still makes it a mystery.
Culturally, the movie tapped into the issues of marital infidelity that are brought about by the circumstances of work and loneliness. Having an affair with another person is a social issue that breaks social norms of being in a trusting relationship between only two people. In the movie, the spouses of the main characters are having an affair whenever they are on a business trip. One evening, Mr. Chow invited Mrs. Su to dinner at a restaurant to discuss important matters regarding their marriages. Mr. Chow asked questions about the similar material possession that their spouses possess. Eventually, they admitted that they knew about the affairs of their spouses but kept quiet.
