Technology, directly and indirectly, altered human perception. Since humans are innately materialistic, they are naturally inclined to preserve their existence, which is achieved by rapidly evolving technological advancements. The materialistic view can be associated with existentialism, where humans hope to retain a part of them in this world to not fall to oblivion after death. An example of humans’ covetousness is the use of technology to retain stories and ideologies in history by portraying them through concrete means, such as creating films, which can be watched repeatedly by the living even after the death of the creator. This paper shall discuss the technological advancements to maintain human existence to prevent one’s prestige from swimming into the void after demise.
Technology arbitrates and institutes our understanding of bodily existence. Meaning, this allows us to experience unique occurrences while residing in this world. Moreover, it opens possibilities that were previously closed due to the lack of innovations. Its massive influence can prolong or completely eradicate an idea, various cultural functions, social norms, and many contents by capitalizing on material investments. Thus, it changes our affinity and lines our past ideations to the current trends (Sobchack 136-137).
Due to technology’s versatility, it represented an idea into reality, which provides a platform for people to express themselves and create ideas even without the approval of many. Technology constructed a media that can refrain people from forgetting concepts and practices, even when these have long been extinct. For example, in the nineteenth century, photographs were invented, and these allowed people to cherish others who have passed away or relive the moments that were once captivating. In the twentieth century, the use of electronic screens was rampant, paving the way for motion pictures to influence the viewers’ subjectivity and objectivity (Sobchack 137-139).
Photographs and electronic screens are products of technology that complicity formed a space that altered human representations. These are called perceptual technologies, which contain the greatest power because they can influence people’s senses and their ability to create an impression of oneself and others. These can be done through the use of cinemas, photography, computers, and television. This is important because a concept or material that can influence human perceptions is dangerous, for this can be used to manipulate many aspects of life. This extends broader than the physical aspect of life (Sobchack 139).
