Motivation is a process that involves initiating, guiding, and maintaining ardent behaviors. It involves emotional, biological, psychological, social, and cognitive forces that activate behavior. There are various types of motivational factors. In this case, we will discuss the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors and how the carrot-and-stick approach to motivation is used in business.
Intrinsic motivational factors are factors that come from within self to meet personal needs. For example, an individual desire to perform a specific task resulting in their beliefs or fulfilling their aspirations. These aspirations include acceptance, curiosity, setting goals, autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Some intrinsic factors may lead to better performance while others won’t. To demonstrate, if we focus on autonomy which involves the desire to be self-directed, master more skills and focus on getting better, and maximize the purpose of a goal, it will lead to better performance.<...
