Art is the expression of an individual's thoughts, intuitions, desires, and emotions. However, art is more than the above definition as it involves sharing the experience given to us by the world and may extend to personality. It tends to communicate the intimate thoughts, which cannot be portrayed clearly by words alone when words alone are not enough, we look for other means to convey the message to the intent. Messages do vary from politics, environment, religion, nature, love, family, social settings to culture. Art ought not to be positive as it is intended to deliver the exact thoughts or feelings thus could be either positive or negative, and these feelings vary from the artist to the audience. This paper is going to effectively analyze the work of the Spanish artist Bartolome del Castro and base the study on his art piece " Pope Honorious III Approving the Rule of Saint Francis of Assisi."
Bartolome del Castro created Pope Honorious III Approving the Rule of Saint Francis of Assisi in the sixteenth century. Castro was an active artist/painter in the sixteenth century. He lived in Palencia. Fellow artist Diego Angulo describes Castro's work as to large and awkward figures (Gardner 217). There are a few signed works, for example, the Santo Domingo of the Lazaro Galdiano Museum and from this, it was possible to assign the painter with three other tables in the Lazaro Galiano Museum for works of Annunciation. Adoration of the kings, the nativity which all came from the same source that is the convent of San Pablo de Palencia. There also exists an expressive San Onfreot, which is signed in large Gothic letters, its origin is unknown (Mateo 221). It is in the Masaveu collection. It is very close to the way of arranging the figures in the landscape to the Saint John the Baptist piece in the British private collection.
Castro work is dated c 1500 and was developed in Europe, Spain. This painting is among the seven panels that are from the large two-sided polyptych. It was made for the high altar and portrays the life of Saint Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order who died in 1226. It has a medium of Tempera and tooled gold on panel. Tempera technique was popular before the oil painting took over in the 1400s. The Renaissance and the medieval painters used to create the works in tempera on panel. On Castro piece, the Saint (Francis) is seated on the right, and he is receiving a papal approval. The followers are bowing on the left facing the Saint Francis of Assisi. It shows Saint Francis receiving approval from the pope of the rules written to make his followers take a vow of poverty. The egg-based paint was stable and gave out consistency as it adhered to gesso. It archived richness in color and dried in minutes (Voras 12). Gold was incorporated into many tempera paintings.
