Batista Dossi, in his flight into Egypt painting, took significant caution to narrate the tale of the holy family in this exquisite portrait. The Ferrarese artist Batista Dossi circa1490-1548 painting titled flight into Egypt is oil on panel. Dossi composed this painting alongside his brothers, who were fellow chief artists in the court of Ferrara. Dossi was the youngest of the brothers, and all worked under el-colle 2 d'este, and I'd Este. Most of the pieces of art they crafted were ephemeral, and so they got lost due to wear and tear, the impact of time, having been transient. These brothers made designs for theatre sets and tapestries, composed frescoes for the land's natives, painted table wear and banners, made coins, and designed decorations for both major and minor festivals. Among their many creations were carriages and badges. Apart from the fact that most of their creations were lost with time, fortunately, a relatively large number of easel compositions were conserved. Surprisingly, most of the art pieces commissioned by the Ferrara courts were of allegorical or mythological issues, a fact that points to the cultural and intellectual focus of the Ferrara court members. The Ferrara brothers were highly revered as everyone considered them as highly authentic painters of that period. It is interesting to note that some historians attribute their artistic expressions to influence from contemporary influences such as Giorgione in Venice and Raphael of Rome.
Dossi's work draws immediate appreciation from its viewers due to his generous application of glowing shadow, light, and color. Moreover, he imbues his landscapes with quite poetic effects. His presentation of the elegant panoramic on the right in the portrait is a moderately imaginative vista, accompanies with the jagged rocks that characterize his oeuvre. Most historians regard the rock renderings as the younger brother's contribution to the entire collection from Dossi's shop.
The shading and colors of flight from Egypt look as if the flemish chromatic recession invigorated them. There are quite notable movements of green from brown then to blue. These are followed by an upward and deep movement towards the horizon. The landscape is painted in a yellow-green, an almost acidic hue a typical Ferrarese consideration. This is the same Nothern landscape in Batista's other 1530-35 work titled the martyrdom of Saint Stephen( Fundacion collecion thysen- bornemisza, Madrid ).
