While I did not experience white fragility as the authors stated, it is clear to me that the notion that people will deny that they have advantages or entitlements over others is still common. I noticed that any mention or thoughts that covert and overt racism is still prevalent tends to be ignored. There are differences in the way people interact and I was concerned that the authors oversimplified the idea white fragility as they overemphasized how whites react to challenges to their positions in society. Now I acknowledge that there are entitlements and sense of superiority that whites cannot acknowledge openly because at times it comes subconsciously. There is also a need for more interactions among people of different races as people make assumptions based on stereotypes without having interacted with those different from them.
I approached the listening sessions differently as I chose slow tempo music at one time and stayed in a place with no distractions or interruptions. I was able to focus my mind and this was relaxing. I also believe that changes in behavior can be observed when one self-reflects, which is possible when one is relaxed and even improves emotional well-being. However, it is not clear whether the new approach to the listening sessions affects emotions, the body and mind temporarily. The listening sessions were important because there was emphasis on enhancing relaxation and concentration and can help improve self-expression.
