VISUAL ANALYSIS PAPER
One of the more traditional assignments that students encounter in an introductory Art History class is to go to a museum to observe an object(s) and write a paper that details its stylistic features. Since the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus has a very fine collection of Renaissance to Rococo paintings, select one painting from this time span to concentrate on.
Once having selected the painting from the Lowe’s collection, pay close attention to stylistic features (i.e., composition, color, use of light/shadow, perspective, figures, pose, gestures, et al). Describe the object and compare/contrast it to pieces we have studied in class, whether in the PowerPoint lectures or in the textbook. When selecting objects to compare the museum piece to, be discerning. That is, try to find objects that share more characteristics than not. The aim of this assignment is for students to develop an eye for style and to locate the subtle differences that distinguish one technique or tendency from another.
Organize the paper, which should be five to seven (5-7) pages in length, into an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion. The introduction may include some general information (e.g., historical, economic, cultural) about the object's specific time period, the technique utilized to create the object, etc. More importantly, the introduction should include a thesis statement about the object's overall aesthetic. Then organize the body in a logical, analytic fashion, and conclude the paper with some remarks about the significance of the object -- that is, how it fits into a larger Renaissance to Rococo art historical framework.
Remember, this is NOT a research paper; however, if you quote a source (e.g., a placard or web site from the museum), be sure to cite it.

Visual Analysis
Different art periods are defined by different great artists. Di Credi’s painting, “Madonna and Child”, was one of the most notable paintings during Baroque period. It was an art period that was characterized by pro-catholic meanings to art. The painting was done in 1500. In this essay, I compare that piece with Michelangelo’s Pieta (c 1500) also painted during the high renaissance period. I argue that the images are varied in their contrast and setting and this helps to arouse different emotions among the viewers.
Visual Analysis of Madonna and Child
In a similar pattern to other Catholic art paintings by Di Credi, the painting occupies the foreground mostly. Madonna is attractively painted using a nearly transparent whitish color. Her robe is painted using a mixture of colors including red, brown, white, light blue, and a color that looks somewhat dark. The artist beautifully modifies the oil medium so that it is brought out clearly through the rendering of the clothing and the jewelry.
The size of the image of Madonna looks extra-large, in an almost larger than life size. The size of the painting is not stated but it appears as if it is larger than what one would consider an ordinary object. The artist has also portrayed Madonna as if she is situated at the center of the foreground while at the background; there is a landscape that brings a sense of peace and serenity. It looks like one of those paintings that has been used over the years to represent Mary and her son Jesus. This painting is regarded as one of the most precious in the world. Therefore, it is one of the most expensive.
In the painting, a mother is holding her child on her lap while she sits next to a window. With her right hand, she holds the baby while her child holds onto her left hand. The baby is naked and from the outlook it looks healthy and happy. The mother is beautifully dressed in a long gown with blue outer cover and yellow inner linings. She also has a reddish dress while her head is covered with a bluish transparent net. At the background, there is a transparent window that which makes it possible to see the serene city that has buildings and trees. The background is mostly dominated by green and bluish colors. That it is possible to see outside makes one arrive at the conclusion that the mother is sitting on a high place so that she can her a good view of her surroundings.
The child on her lap looks surprised but relaxed. The mother seems to be looking at him adoringly with much love. They seem to have a connection that is only possible for two people that love each other. They seem to have only each other, with no one to talk to. Therefore, they both hold on tight, never wanting to let go. They are focused and look to be in deep thought. Mostly, the mother seems to have something disturbing her.
The color used in this portrait can only be described as sharp because all the colors used seem to have a clear difference in their intensity. Different colors such as blue, yellow, and red have been used in such a way that they seem to have a sharp contrast between hem, thus clearly helping to bring out images of different clothing and robes that are used in the pai...
