How does film take on authority?
In the case of Battleship Potemkin, the film takes the authority in portraying the significance of food to the community and the power of this food to people. The ship sailors are consistently offered meat that is already rotten as their stable food. This is in spite of their frequent complaints of the presence of maggots in these foods. These frequent complaints do not however, change anything as the sailors are forced to go angry due to lack of food. They turn against their superiors and form an uprising, which results into a hierarchical change in the boat, sending the rebels into a spiral of power. This film has vividly indicated the significance of food in creating authority since those who are able to control it are the one with strength to control others.
Officers at the Battleship Potemkin want to have a grip on the rest of the sailors and the trick they employ is controlling the entire of the sailor’s food. This is because in essence, food gives strength and life, thereby giving the officers the strength and authority they need. These soldiers give the sailors rotten meat, which contains maggots indicating that the meat was very spoiled. This is intentional as they do not want their subjects to have strength or the power. When the sailors inform the doctor on the status of the meat, he simply ignores their lamenting and tells them to wash the meat with brine. This also indicates that those in power (Grace, 1925, 2) were controlling the doctor.
