A reflection of ‘Eros plus Massacre.'
The narration by Yoshishige Yoshida ‘Eros plus Massacre’ of 1969 collides, combines, and exemplifies various aspects of both facts and fiction, and present and past. An act that is best described as a "phantasmagoria" since the story in Eros intertwines the original story from 1916 through to 1923. The narration involves Nihilists and Free love-espousers Noe Ito, Sakae Osugi, their innermost circle, and the illusory stories of Eiko, a modern young woman involved in sexual exploitation as she investigates the lives of Osugi and Ito. During her quest, Eiko established her circle that comprises of only male characters like Wada (a young pyromaniac), Cinema (a film director), and Hinoshiro (a detective investigating her connection with prostitution).
Such a unique combination of strands necessitates the story to be ranked among the most tilted narrative styles in cinema history. This is the case because the story demonstrates a continuing artistic discourse with Yoshida's fellow members at the Japanese New Wave and the top celebrities of European art cinema like Antonioni, Resnais, and Godard. In return, this makes it difficult for critics to determine whose narrative the film is about: is it for Eiko and her men, or is it, Ito? However, there lacks enough evidence on-screen to solve this issue.
