Easy Rider Structure
Easy rider is a 1969 film that can be considered a cultural phenomenon. It dared to show the parts of America that were hardly shown on television. This essay is an analysis of the key structure of the film.
Act 1 / The Beginning (Opening scene, set up, themes & catalyst)
The film starts with an introduction to the world of drugs and the main protagonists for the film. Wyatt and Billy are freewheeling motorcyclists and they have managed to smuggle cocaine from Mexico to Los Angeles. The themes of drugs are introduced at the onset and later on sex, hippie culture, and racism are also portrayed in the film through the representation of the protagonists and their reactions. The cash is stuffed in a plastic tube which is latter hidden in the tank of Wyatt's California-style chopper painted in the colors of the American flag. They both embark eastwards heading to New Orleans, Louisiana hoping to get there just in time for the Mardi Gras festival.
Act 2A / The Middle (Part 1) (B Story & Middle point)
As they head to New Orleans, they stop in Arizona to have one of their bikes fixed. They encounter a farmer and his family who are welcoming and appear to practice the notion of free love. It is this point Wyatt picks up a hippie hitch-hiker and invites him back to his commune. As they prepare to leave, the hitch-hiker gives Wyatt some LSD as an appreciation to share with the right people.
