Artists have this uncanny ability to bring imaginations into reality. In truth, art is not something that everybody understands. It takes a lot for an artist to stick in the public mind and acquire a genius's status. To be elevated to a genius, an artist's work must have stood the test of time. In this opinion article, I shall discuss legendary names such as Vincent van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, and Alvar Aalto.
Jackson Pollock
As a gifted painter, Pollock was hindered by self-doubt, addiction, and a little awkwardness. However, he regained focus and transformed his faults between 1947 and 1950. While elaborating his painting process, Pollock said that "My painting does not come for the easel…I prefer to tack the unstretched canvas to the hard wall or floor (MoMA)." Often, Pollock used house paint right from the can while throwing and dropping layers of skeins that left a marvelous record of his movements. At the height of his career, Pollock painted one of his famous pieces, One: Number 31, 1950. This painting is among the three wall-size paintings he brought to life in the summer and fall of 1950. The painting is a densely interlaced thread of paint peppered by pools and splashes of color. The famous painting was produced by laying the canvas on the floor while pouring, flicking, and dribbling the paint onto the surface. Pollock inspired a new art movement known as Abstract Expressionism.
