In what way is the film a visual representation of Frantz Fanon's ideas in his text 'On Violence'?
The chapter 'On Violence' in Frantz Fanon's book The Wretched of the Earth, Fanon argues that colonizers are intent on using violence against the colonized to entrench colonialism and subdue the subjects. The colonized subjects, in turn, learn to use violence from the colonists and armed struggle is the way to liberate themselves (Fannon 33-34). The film 'The Battle of Algiers' reenacts the events surrounding the Algerian revolution and fight against French colonialism in 1952-1957. Furthermore, the film begins with French soldiers entering Algiers ready to take over the Casbah streets. The French troops use violence, torture and bomb homes in Casbah, the Arab quarter of Algiers as they target FLN fighters, women and children.
In the film, the police and soldiers use violence to try and quell insurrections and this helps to control Algeria for the benefit of France. Fanon (3) pointed out that it is the police officer or soldier...
