Abstract:
Gender and sexuality are among the common ideas in many films. Men and women are traditionally portrayed differently. Among the common issues in gender and sexuality is the role of women in society, how women view the world, how men view the world, feminism and the division of labor. While other women agree that their position in the world is to be housewives, househelps and subordinate to men, while others believe they have equal opportunities and capabilities—the latter advocate for equal treatment in leadership positions, social placings and economic endeavours. The films Meek’s Cutoff and Rear Window explore feminism, gender and sexuality from opposing sides. The Meek’s Cutoff portrays women fighting for equality and recognition of their capabilities. On the other hand, the Rear Window portrays women as obsessed with marriage, comfortable with how men view them and enjoying being victims of violence and abuse.
