A single picture can summarize a piece of information that would otherwise be expressed or explained with wordy sentences that are time-consuming and difficult to interpret. Communication experts argue that other than the verbal and nonverbal communications, visual communication completes the set for the three main types of communication, and its effectiveness is mainly attributed to the concept of graphic design and imagery (Nishadha par. 1). Healthcare information is critical and any amount of misinformation or misunderstanding may lead to catastrophic damages and therefore use of factual, verified, and easy to understand mediums of communication is of great significance. Incorporation of graphic design in the healthcare sector has played a major role particularly in the creation of awareness, data visualization and analysis, and in presenting information more appealingly, which has contributed immensely to life preservation.
The most basic and important step in the fight against diseases is taking preventive measures. Prevention is important because it cost nearly nothing and enables one to avoid unnecessary treatment costs in case of an infection. Prevention can only be achieved if the necessary health precautions are made readily available to the public. There is no better way of presenting awareness in a more effective manner like the use of properly designed graphics. As observed by Roberts, graphic design aid a great deal in the dissemination of information relating to the mode of spread, symptoms, treatment and preventive measures to infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, Ebola and the recent COVID 19 even to the barely literate, hence contributing to saving of human lives (par. 1). Also, visual representation is more persuasive and realistic, capturing the attention of many at a glance.
