1. Comprehension: A key criteria being assessed is how well do you demonstrate comprehension of the core concepts being addressed in the paper in relation to the assignment question i.e. how well does the paper demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter being addressed in your chosen assignment question. Knowledge and understanding includes, but goes beyond, simply describing what others say on the topic.
The subject matter relates to whichever topic is being evaluated in each assignment question. All assignment questions relate to the key themes being addressed in the module. The assignment must demonstrate your comprehension of the topic under discussion and can be either somewhat minimal or cursory and surface level or you can demonstrate a deep understanding and comprehension of the subject matter. That is, how well or how little do you demonstrate comprehension of your chosen assignment topic. Generally the depth of comprehension relates to the type and number of source/reference material chosen to support your answer.
On the whole, drawing on newspaper articles and/or online blogs results in a very simplistic and cursory comprehension whilst drawing on reliable and highly rated research journal articles are more likely to deepen your comprehension. Indeed, It is impossible to demonstrate deep understanding of subject material based on minimal engagement with the scholarly literature.
That is, your comprehension of the core concepts had to be based on sound and reliable evidence i.e. deep comprehension comes from reading reliable and scholarly academic source material. Therefore, you must demonstrate an ability to research, draw on, and synthesis material from high quality research sources such as high ranking journal articles (Academy of Management Review, Organization Studies, Accounting, Organizations, and Society, Journal of Business Ethics, Human Relations, British Journal of Industrial Relations, or Journal of Politics and Society and so on) or respected scholarly books and textbooks.

2. Academic Writing: This refers to how well you present your argument and your answer to the assignment question. A clear structure signals a deeper understanding of the topic. Academic writing criteria includes the structure of the writing, the flow and logic of the writing, the clarity of argument, and the spelling and grammar used such that your intended meaning is clear to the reader.
The assignment is expected to provide a clear and logical answer the assignment question with a clearly laid out introduction and the body of the text providing sections and paragraph that support your primary argument.
Crucially, presentation includes use of consistent and correct Harvard referencing format. The Harvard reference format is the only academic referencing format used by the Warwick Business School and the Warwick Faculty of Arts.
Using academic citations and research to support your argument is standard in academic papers. Research must come from academic studies (journals and books) and not from inappropriate / weak online source material or an over reliance on media sources.
3. Analysis: This criteria builds on comprehension and presentation, but, along with critical reflection, is a key element of the assessment criteria in attaining a higher mark.
Each paper is assessed on how well you go beyond describing what others say to demonstrate your analysis of the arguments and the debates located in the academic literature.
This involves evaluating arguments in order to develop your own analytical insights and conclusions.
Crucially, analysis is demonstrated when you have offer an informed argument (i.e. take a position) in relation to the question posed.
Papers that demonstrate analysis are based on academically-informed perspectives, challenge received opinion and taken-for-granted assumptions and are based on theoretical reasoning, research and evidence, with careful evaluations of competing perspectives.
4. Critical Evaluation: Critical reflection is demonstrated when you are able to evaluate existing arguments, theories, or research based on a wide and deep engagement with high calibre academic literature.
Critical evaluation is typically provided when the assignment paper demonstrates understanding of how, for example, different module elements interrelate and draw on subject matter beyond the narrow confines of the individual assignment questions to evaluate the strengths and limitations of varying arguments supported by evidence drawn from academic research.
Crucially, the claims made in the papers have to be well supported with a wide range of evidence drawn from academic references. Analysis and critical reflection is supported when you answer the 'who says' question when making key claims.
Offering a 'personal opinion' is insufficient for an academic paper i.e. papers that used your own taken-for-granted assumptions, papers based on a student's gut reaction, personal opinion, make sweeping statements, or intuitive analysis (e.g. "I think that…" or "I believe that...") are not demonstrations of analysis, critique, or critical evaluation.
In order to be able to analyse and critique, you must first comprehend the existing arguments, research and debates that are found in the academic literature.
