Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) has become one of the most popular esports in the world. The game was released in 1999 but has undergone modifications over the years to enhance the users’ experience. It was released as the fourth game in the counter-strike series, but also the first shooter video game in the series. The game consists of two teams pitting against each other, the terrorist team and the counter-terrorist team. Both teams have specific objectives or mission to complete, but they also have to eliminate each other in the process (Esports, 2019). The terrorist team is depicted as the “bad guys” and their mission may entail planting bombs or holding hostages, whereas the counter-terrorist team is mandated with the responsibility to diffuse the bomb or save the hostages. As the game progresses, the players are awarded based on their progressive achievements, whereas penalties are awarded in the events where a player breaks the rules such as showing uncooperative actions in a team. The eventual winner gets rewarded for completing the mission (Forces of Geek, 2019). Gaming presents a wide range of benefits for gamers. In 2000, they released the first standalone version; Counter-Strike for PC (Forces of Geek, 2019). By teaming up with Hidden Path Entertainment, further developments on the game were undertaken, and in March 2010, development of Global Offensive officially started. The game was released later in the year, with further modifications depending on the user’s experience and feedback. By August 2012, versions for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, OS X and PlayStation 3 were available in the market. Later developments led to the release of a Linux Version in 2014.
