Road transport is undoubtedly one of the central pillars of any country's economic development. Every government needs to strike a viable balance between setting speed limits on different roads to ensure road safety for all users and, at the same time, ensure that economic growth is not derailed through time wastage in traffic. Speed, like many other variables, is one of the key contributors to road accidents globally. To that effect, authorities worldwide have been at the forefront to formulate and enforce policies that would govern road users to avert such fatalities. Speed limitation has been and remains a controversial topic among motorists. Some support the enactment of speed limitation rules and regulations on our roads, and those who oppose such laws cite the use of conscience and common sense. Nonetheless, regardless of the divergent opinions on speed limitation, the simple fact remains that road usage needs to be safe for everyone, including pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists. Therefore, it is my opinion that speed limits should be enforced on our roads.
Typically, speed limits portray the optimal speed by motorists safe for most road users under normal conditions. The limits are usually not intended to target drivers but allow them to be responsible road users to avoid accidents that can be detrimental to even themselves. However, in setting up speed limits, the authorities should not do it in isolation.
