The health of the people in Folkstone and Hythe district is monitored and managed by the district council. It is well placed to help in the improvement of the wellbeing of the residents through the encouragement of healthy living. The council recognizes the various social and economic factors that shape or determine the health of the people (Folkestone and Hythe District Council, 2022). These are factors beyond the usual health and medical care when an individual becomes ill. Provision of favorable factors in the social and economic environment acts as preventive measures against more serious illnesses. They include the provision of adequate housing for all, good access to public parks that would promote physical exercises, the presence of gardens, open spaces for leisure activities, and working crossly with partners and agencies (Folkestone and Hythe District Council, 2022).
The district has available health statistics that would help in evaluating the level of health care and the gaps that may need to be covered. According to the Kent public health observatory, the life expectancy for males and females individuals at birth in the district is 79.4 years and 83.2 years, respectively. The average life expectancy in Folkstone and Hythe is 79.4 years which indicates the fair level of health status among the community members. The statistics also indicate the presence of medical conditions prevalent in the community (KPHO, 2018). 6.8% of the population above the age of 17 years lives with diabetes mellitus. 14.7% of the population of all ages live with hypertension, 5.6% live with asthma, and 2.1% of the population live with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The mental health issue is another concern in the district because 11.2% of adults have been recorded by their general practitioners as having depression. In the year 2018/2019, a total of 180 individuals were admitted to the emergency department s for serious mental health issues (KPHO, 2018).
