J&J prides itself on providing its consumers with safe cosmetic powder products. The company says that it will stop at nothing to meet and exceed its customers’ expectations and evolve its product preferences. Since 1886, J&J has focused on offering a variety of products and services. Some of them include Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower. When this firm launches a new product, it has a target demographic in mind. For example, Johnson’s Baby Powder was meant for babies. However, this preference sometimes changes to target another potential group of individuals. By using ethical relativism, deontological, and teleological theories, the paper analyses J&J’s behaviors in responding to its consumers about the potential health risks related to its products.
J&J has encountered numerous crises in the past related to its products. In some cases, the firm responds appropriately while in other times it is uncompetitive in the approach it takes. For instance, in 1982, J&J recalled about 31 million Tylenol bottles, which were pain relief capsules, since they contained potassium cyanide that caused death to seven individuals when ingested. Teleological theories, particularly consequentialism assess things based on the consequences. If something has positive effects it is believed to be moral and if it has negative impacts it is considered immoral. By recalling a product that was harmful to consumers, J&J prevented adverse consequences to its consumers. Hence, the company was morally right and proved that it cared for its clients. J&J portrayed a good image by not denying the problem but rather addressing it.
Nevertheless, J&J was not right in addressing specific issues that followed after the Tylenol crisis. As depicted by consequentialism, it is always good to evaluate the consequences of the things that an individual or company does. If one’s behaviors or actions have detrimental effects, the most significant thing to do is to rectify the situation for the better, which is called morality. In the incident of Johnson’s Baby
