Business Strategies and Government Policies on Climate Change Report Sample

Essay Instructions:

Five years after the Paris Agreement on climate change was signed, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the way we live and work. The effects of COVID-19 lockdowns all over the world has brought a decline in greenhouse gas emissions. World carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels fell by 8% in 2020, the largest absolute drop in emissions ever recorded. However, the climate emergency worsened during this period. Although a drop in emissions in a single year will not slow the pace of global warming, COVID-19 offers a unique opportunity to secure long-term emissions, so long as economic recovery is aligned with addressing climate change. Climate change, like the coronavirus, does not respect national boundaries. Hence there is an urgent need for a collective and multilateral approach to solving world problems. There needs to be convergence between how the world is dealing with COVID-19 and what needs to be done to address climate change. A transformative change is required to ensure that emissions continue to decline in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement of holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C. • In what sectors of the economy is it possible to achieve net zero emissions by 2050?

Business Strategies and Government Policies on Climate Change Report
Every negative experience or development has a positive aspect attached to it. Global recessions resulted in business and governments taking measures to avoid future events. Similarly, the COVID-29 pandemic has served as an eye opener on the ability to reduce global warming and climate change. The drastic reduction in world carbon dioxide emissions, albeit by a small margin, has confirmed that utmost dedication from the relevant parties can enhance the acquisition of the resolutions passed in the Paris Agreement on climate change. The business sector and government entities play a central role towards achieving these goals. Businesses can institute appropriate strategies that focus on efficient operations. Government, on their part, can formulate policies that safeguard the environment against destruction.
Lessons from COVID-19 for Climate Change
The COVID-19 pandemic presents several lessons that can help in combating climate change. One of them is to act now, rather than later. The pandemic has exposed the laxity of leaders in reacting to unprecedented threats. Countries that reacted quickly to the pandemic were able to slow it down. However, those that reacted slowly, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea delayed in their response, which led to significant losses (Klenert et al., 2020). Similarly, while the effects of climate change continue to be felt, the efforts have not been inspiring. It is important to treat this issue with the urgency that it deserves.
The second most important lesson is to involve the citizens in the environmental protection process. The COVID-19 pandemic management process involved providing directives to the people and implementing some guidelines that appeared unpopular but the end product has been containment of the virus. Similarly, the government should be willing to make unpopular decisions and implement stringent measures that will protect the environment for the future. If the people are included in the measures, such as reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by mandatory reliance on renewable energy sources may lead to a cleaner. Therefore, governments should strive to get everybody onboard in protecting the environment. Getting the people to understand the significance of the process to their lives will boost public participation and achieve better results.
Economic Recovery Opportunities
Economic recovery from the pandemic provides several opportunities that both governments and businesses can use to increase resilience in such times. Businesses can take advantage of the fiscal stimulus that their governments are providing to maximize on their profitability. Tax reductions, government subsidies and other forms of support that states provide significantly reduce operation costs of many bu...
