Vaccination and immunizations are some of the ways to reduce the risk of preventable illness and deaths. Despite vaccination reducing and preventing the spread of some infectious diseases, vaccination is increasingly a controversial and polarizing issue, partly because of the rise of the anti-vaccine movement (anti-vaxxers) (Leask & McIntyre, 2003, p. 4701). Opponents of vaccination often question the ethics of vaccination, promote free choice, question vaccine efficacy, and highlight the side effects. Some of the vaccine skeptics ignore that side effects are few and mild, while vaccines have been essential to reducing the spread of preventable infections and illnesses. Vaccination is promoted to prevent community transmission and serious illnesses considering benefits to individuals and the community that outweigh the costs. There are also disadvantages when vaccines are less effective and cause adverse effects.
Vaccination helps fight diseases, making it possible to control, eliminate and even eradicate infectious diseases. There are vaccine-preventable infectious diseases such as polio that affect the quality of life among those affected, and the consequences can be avoided by getting vaccinated. Furthermore, vaccination is one of the most effective tools to prevent some infectious diseases and is one of the public health measures that have saved the most lives over time. However, for vaccinations to be effective, individuals must receive all the vaccines that correspond to their age and vaccination schedule. Data does not establish a causal relationship between vaccines and worsening health outcomes. On the contrary, most people and the community benefit when herd immunity helps to slow down and prevent some infections and diseases.
Vaccination doses boost the immune system, and vaccine-acquired immunity can provide long-lasting protection against infections and reduces the transmission of primary infections. Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies and immunity response, which helps defend against pathogens (Al-Kassmy, Pedersen and Kobinger, 2020).The immunity system is more likely to recognize the infections in the future if there are already vaccination and contact with the infection. Furthermore, when a large share of the population is vaccinated, this slows down and reduces the severity of infections spreading. Natural immunity is better than vaccine acquired immunity. Still, highly infectious diseases pose a severe risk of disease and mortality and can be prevented through vaccinations.
