Structure for essay and marking criteria:
(Please use the following underlined section headings in your report)
1. Title
2. Provide the full correct reference for paper (authors, year, title, journal, volume, page numbers)
3. Lay summary (~150 words) : Briefly summarise the research in a paragraph using layman's terms. What are the biological and computational goals and why are they important? (5 marks)
Layman’s terms used (2) Biological goals clearly stated (1) Computational goals clearly stated (1) Explanation of why are goals important (1)
4. Background of study (~450 words): Appraise the work in context of the preceding work. What other related research was completed prior to this work and how was it done? How does the paper help to advance the science of the specific field and how does it compare/contrast with previous studies? What is the wider impact of the work? (15 marks)

Mulder, N., Schwartz, R., Brazas, M. D., Brooksbank, C., Gaeta, B., Morgan, S. L., ... & Welch, L. (2018). The development and application of bioinformatics core competencies to improve bioinformatics training and education. PLoS Computational Biology, 14(2), p.e1005772.
Lay Summary
The increase in size of data and complexity in investigations has mandated the need for increased training in the field of bioinformatics. Very many individuals require the training although there are differences in the degree of comprehensiveness of the material or knowledge to be disseminated. In order to successfully analyze a dataset, there is a need to acquire diverse competencies. The Curriculum Task Force of the International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB) Education Committee has produced numerous bioinformatics core competencies and ensure that they are mapped to diverse user profiles. In this analysis, the authors present the last iteration of the identified competencies and certain examples that demonstrate how they are being used to drive learning and training within the field of bioinformatics in different contexts. Therefore, the objectives outlined are essential in enhancing understanding as well as the importance of training within the field of bioinformatics.
Background of Study
The ISCB have been involved in several workshops and annual general meetings as a way of apprehending the bioinformatics. These annual meeting and workshops is a way of enhancing their competencies and applications of bioinformatics through discussions. For instance the ISCB attended the Global Organization for Bioinformatics Learning, Education and Training (GOBLET) as a way of enhancing the competencies in the areas of operation as well as the user profile definitions (Mulder et al. 2018). The mapping of the bioinformatics competencies especially to the audiences requires the consideration of three user profiles which include the user, the scientist and the engineer in bioinformatics. In the early competency workshops, it is postulated that the user profiles was not effective and convenient since it was unable to decode the roles which was under the bioinformatics curriculum and competency. The participants in bioinformatics delay in describing the bioinformatics users especially when they are defining informatics, they give different accounts which has the same meaning and a close resemblance. Furthermore, they spent most of the time in describing the difference between bioinformatics engineer and bioinformatics scientist. For instance when they are defining informatics, they give different accounts which has the same meaning and a close resemblance. For instance they defined bioinformatics as “the application of computing knowledge to the appropriate discipline such as effectively utilizing the bioinformatics tools,” which is similar to, “analyzing a problem and defining the computing requirement which is appropriate to the solution.” However the participants in the workshop reduced the pleonastic in the previous set of the bioinformatics competence from twenty competencie...
