The two types of colonial rule common in Africa included settler colonialism and indirect rule. The British colonizers implemented indirect rule. In this form of colonial rule, the imperialist British regime controlled and conquered African nations through the agency of the local rulers. Such was noted in Nigeria whereby while the local elite rulers ruled by following the local laws and customs, they were supposed to acknowledge the over-lordship of their colonial master and respect it. When the ruler failed to acknowledge the over-lordship, the colonial masters replaced them with other local leaders that accepted the new dispensation readily. On the other hand, settler colonialism involved the replacement of the original population of the local people with a new society of settlers from the colonial master’s homeland. Owing to the explanation provided about indirect rule and settler colonialism reveals that either argument on whether colonialism brought development to Africa or not is true. Primarily, settler colonialism in South Africa was infective and unhelpful to the citizens. The settlers in the South Africa segregated the Africans and took over the nation. Instead of steering development agendas, they overly concentrated in creating schools for the settlers ensuring that no Native South African received the services they did. Despite the increased investment in business development and agriculture, the development benefited the settlers only. In response to the discriminatory settler colonization of South Africa, the natives decided to fight the institutionalized racial segregation. The Africans were underdeveloped in South Africa resulting in increased rates of poverty due to oppression from the settler colonialists.
The indirect rule form of colonialism in Africa steered Africans towards development. The indigenous education of Africans nations such as Nigeria was better maintained. The Africans were educated and managed to take leadership through the well-developed education system, thus they became independent in their governance compared to the settler type of colonialism.
