Prince by Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli wrote the famous book "The Prince" in 1532. In this piece of work, describes how a leader can gain power and maintain it. Throughout the book, he gives various qualities of a responsible leader, while citing some examples of leaders who exemplified such qualities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the content of this book "The Prince", in order to reveal how the book vindicates, and at the same time tarnishes Machiavelli's name as a leader who has a republican reputation.[Italian political leader. According to Machiavelli, "Whenever those states, which have been acquired as stated, have been accustomed to live under their own laws and freedom, there are three courses for those who wish to hold them. The first is to ruin them, the next is to reside there in person, the third is to permit them to live under their own laws, drawing tribute, and establishing within it an oligarchy which will keep it friendly to you". Arguing with reference to republicans, the way Machiavelli has described the actions a prince can take justifies his reputation as a republican. For instance, President Bush who was a republican, acted in the same way as a prince would act towards a province that has unlawful acts. As per Machiavelli's argument of a good leader, President Bush had no blame for allowing his armies to attack Iraq. On the other hand, Machiavelli's argument of what a prince can do tarnishes his reputation as a republican. A good leader does not deprive his people the will to chose whom they want to be their leader. Therefore, by arguing that a prince can decide to move his government to the conquered land, and live there in order to ensure full authority over the region, tarnishes his reputation as a republican as this will deny the inhabitants of the conquered land the opportunity to elect leaders of their choice.
Machiavelli continues to expound on how a leader can maintain his power by citing the example that if a leader becomes a master of a city accustomed to liberty, and fails to destroy it, he must be prepared to be ruined by it. No matter the precautions that will be put in place, at onetime the inhabitants of the city if not dispersed will revolt in the name of liberty. He supports his words with an example of Pisa after been held captives for more than one hundred years by Florentines. This part of Machiavelli's words vindicates the current situation with republicans. When Republican Party was in the reign, it failed to cripple the other parties that could pose a threat of winning in the general elections.
