In the context of political economics, realist and Gramscian theories of power diverge significantly. When analyzing these ideas, the fundamental issues arise from their divergent conceptions of the state and, as a result, their competing perspectives on authority and hegemony. Realists recognize the state as a single body of officials following national interests. Still, Gramscian academics contend that the state consists of both official government members and the unofficial ruling class.
