Essay Instructions:

The building is : The Los angeles City Hall
Descriptive Research Paper
Students will select a building from their own community to use as the subject for this assignment. Students will be required to post a photo and brief description of the proposed building during Week 11. Students are encouraged to select a twentieth century building for this assignment to align with the focus of the second half of the course. Your building selection for this assignment must be of a different style/period from the building selected for the “40 Questions” assignment. Because you will need to describe the building's exterior in your paper, be sure to select a building that you are able to visit and photograph (interior access isn't necessary).
Students will then draft a 1500-2000 word paper, which must include the following:
- A brief discussion of the subject building's development history and pertinent background information (date of construction, architect or builder (if known), original use, etc.).
- An architectural description of the building's exterior. See sample architectural descriptions and additional resources to assist with researching and drafting papers posted under “Course Resources.” It's worth noting any particularly significant interior features, but you do not need to include a description of the building's interior in your paper.
- A comparative analysis of the building's architectural style in relation to other local, regional, and national examples of the style.
