“Superfundland” is a video that explains why the Superfund program was established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and how it functions to reclaim the land that has been contaminated. The Superfund cleans up contaminated land and responds to environmental natural disasters, emergencies, and oil spills. In other words, the program safeguards the environment and public health by ensuring that individuals can work and live in healthy places. The paper focuses on “Superfundland.”
I have learned that the primary objective of the Superfund program is to clean up hazardous waste sites in the United States of America (USA). In particular, about 600 miles in the USA have been polluted by oil spills. Dr. Barry Vacker, a professor of Media Studies and Production, says that the industrial revolution led to the dumping of waste products by large companies haphazardly (Kurtz). The corporations were not bothered to know how the toxic wastes they release affect the environment. Some of these hazardous wastes ended up in the water, soil, and air. However, when their adverse effects were experienced, it was too late since some people had already started to suffer from them. The Superfund was introduced to eliminate toxic waste products to make areas affected livable. In some places, residents had already started getting sick from these toxic contaminants in which case they have to be relocated to other safe areas until the pollutants are all removed.
The Superfund program emphasizes removing hazardous wastes to help humankind make peace with nature. The common waste released by large companies includes greenhouse gases, excessive oil spills, and water pollution.
