The National Flag of Hong Kong incorporates a five-petal Bauhinia white flower against a red field. The flag has been part of Hong Kong’s national history since its adoption on 1st of July 1997. The flag is a symbol of unity and reunification with China through the principle of ‘one country, two systems.’ The Bauhinia blakeana flower is famously known as the Hong Kong Orchard Tree. Its flowers are purple in color, but on the flag, the white illustration is meant to portray harmony and peace. The five stars portrayed on each petal are similar to the five stars on the Chinese national flag and are a sign of the ruling communist party. The colors in the flag also portray political, regional, and cultural aspects. The red color is highly significant since the people of China often use red in festivals. Additionally, the color is a symbol of nationalism and celebrations. The red background also represents a link between the mainland and Hong Kong.
