McCarthyism refers to the period of massive widespread of anticommunist hysteria which engulfed Cold War America. The name McCarthyism is associated with Joseph McCarthy, Wisconsin Senator, who conducted a series of investigations and hearings in the 1950s with an objective of exposing supposed communist infiltration in the different areas of the United States government. This paper explains how the accusation of people for being communists and the influence of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics lead to McCarthyism and how a lack of trust in McCarthy caused the failure of McCarthyism.
During the McCarthyism period, many Americans were blamed for being communists. This made these people become subjects of assertive and forceful investigations as well as questioning by committees, agencies and other government panels. Most of the individuals who were targeted by these investigations included the labor union activists, the government employees, and well individuals in academics and in the entertainment sector.[The American Yawp Reader, 1950.
