Cognitive processes are the mental processes in one’s mind. Cognition is the set of mental processes and abilities related to memory, attention, and evaluation, judgment, reasoning computation, problem-solving and decision making. My life as a student is deeply covered or characterized by various occasions of cognitive processes. They are essential in making decisions.
In learning, I have to pay attention. Notably, this is the first cognitive process in learning. Attention is key to learning and by paying attention we can grasp concepts that we are taught in class.1 An average human being should be able to multi-task on various tasks and duties, and this is a product of the cognitive process of attention. I can divide my attention to the tasks at hand proportionally in a manner that the tasks are undertaken concurrently or simultaneously. Attention can be elusive and can flee if one is not keen.
After paying attention to what we learn in class, the knowledge we gain is stored either in our short term or long term memory. This process of putting information into our memory is called storage. When we perceive things at first, for example, charts on the board, the information is stored in our sensory register.2 By paying more attention to the board and relooking the charts on the board, the information is pushed up from our sensory register to the short term memory and by taking down notes on the charts the information is pushed into the long term memory.
The brain encodes the information to aid the retrieval process. Retrieval is the backward process of encoding. In our examinations, we use these processes to remember what we taught as we paid attention in class, what we revised by taking notes so that the information was stored in our long term memory and finally retrieving the information.
