Should Online Gambling be Banned?
The legality of online gambling continues to raise a heated debate between several government quarters. Although this argument has existed for a long time, people continue to gamble, and there is a high chance that this activity may not end soon. With the advancement in technology and accessibility of the internet, many young people are shifting their attention to online gambling to try their luck at becoming rich faster. The excitement of winning a bet keeps gamblers wanting more and more. To some people, gambling looks like an opportunity to win money and enhance critical thinking but to others, it is a destructive game that results in addiction, crime, depression, and compromising debt issues. This paper argues against the legalization of gambling, claiming that this practice should be banned because it creates more harm than good.
One of the reasons online gambling should be banned is addiction. Online gambling addiction is a compulsive need to continue with the act regardless of the harm it causes. The main symptoms include spending the most time in this activity, experiencing cravings when incapable of gambling, and willingness to spend extra money on gambling. Anyone who has tried this action would agree that online gambling leads to addiction. It makes people have an uncontrollable urge to do it again and again to win. Those who win would want to continue winning. Those who lose would wish to continue trying their luck to win. Once people start gambling online, they find it hard to end the practice. Studies show that approximately 1% of American adults have a severe gambling problem. About 6 to 9 percent of young people and adults experience gambling-related problems. Like most addictions, online gambling infatuation is destructive. It separates families and often leads to substance abuse, suicide, bankruptcy, and crime.[Gainsbury, Sally M. 2015. "Online gambling addiction: the relationship between internet gambling and disordered gambling." Current Addiction Reports 2 (2): 185-193.] [Ibid] [Gainsbury, Sally M. 2015.
