Biography and Career
Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1947, in Autlan de Navarro, Mexico. He studied violin early in a musical household and later played guitar in local bands. Carlos played at San Francisco clubs and cafes after moving there with his family in 1961. After Woodstock in 1969, Santana became famous. Santana's debut album, "Santana," was a commercial triumph the same year. The album's singles were "Evil Ways" and "Soul Sacrifice." Critics and fans lauded Santana's guitar skills and tone. Throughout the 1970s, Santana released successful albums like "Abraxas" and "Caravanserai." His jazz fusion and Latin jazz experiments set him apart from the predominantly white rock environment. Santana released pop R&B (rhythm and blues) records with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter in the 1980s. Santana succeeded in the 1990s after collaborating with Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas on "Smooth." The song was nominated for several prizes, including three Grammys.[Courtney Darrow, “Carlos Santana: Using Music to Unite Communities,” 2014 Symposium: 3]

His guitar plays often use syncopated rhythms and other aspects of Latin music. This action is also seen in his frequent prominent usage of percussion instruments in his songs, such as congas and timbales. The Dorian and Mixolydian modes are among the jazz music scales and methods he employs frequently.
