Islamic Art and the Museum
This course explores how museum displays construct cultural narratives for the consumption of the viewer. It focuses on Islamic art. By examining recent (21st-century) Islamic art museums and gallery installations in North America and Europe, the course addresses the topics of art collecting, orientalism, the colonial gaze, Islamophobia, and the current visual narratives of Islam and Muslims through the arts.

In the first part of the course students are introduced to Islamic art through the collections of some of the main international museums including the British Museum (BM) in the UK, the Louvre in France, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Canada, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), NY. Students will explore the ways in which Islamic art galleries and exhibitions have evolved to reflect academic approaches including post-colonial and object studies. In the second part of the course students will use the learnings and skills acquired in the course to develop a proposal for an Islamic art exhibition and select 20 objects to illustrate their idea from the on-line museum collections.
Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes:
To enable students to gain a critical understanding of museum practices and the role of museums in shaping and constructing cultural narratives.
To enable students to gain transferable skills including critically developing, proposing and presenting an idea, critiquing it, and presenting it orally, digitally and in writing.
To enable students to recognize and identify major museum collections of Islamic art and to critically understand the ways in which they are exhibited and represented.
To enable students to gain a critical understanding of Islam and Muslim societies through their arts.

For more than a thousand years, Islamic art expanded into a vast geographic diversity that is commonly used as decorative elements of Mosques, walls, tiles, doors, and textiles. However, the movement of Islamic art across geographic boundaries evolved the use of patterns and colors depending on the country of origin. The distinct Islamic patterns were affected in both form and ornaments that created a unique blend of Islamic art with individual culture and regional differences of each country.
Nature of the Exhibition
The exhibition is about the colors and patterns of Islamic art from different countries that incorporated their nation's cultures and regional differences. The focus of the exhibition would be color and patterns to identify the uniqueness of each country's innovation in Islamic design. For instance, the exhibition will show the diversity of Islamic patterns because of their specific stylistic features found in different countries such as Spain, the Ottoman Empire countries (Egypt, Syria, and Turkey), and the Middle East countries. Although the specific patterns and colors are found in different countries, the exhibition will show each artwork's interconnectedness with Islam. Thus, it will show the geographic complexities of patterns and colors in Islamic Art.
It is exciting because the viewers can see the complex identity of Islamic art that evolved in each country because of the driving forces of their culture and individuality. Additionally, understanding the Islamic patterns and colors shows the different styles that are within the developmental periods of each country. For instance, the cultural norms of one country can change as time passes; therefore, affecting the use of patterns and colors, but at the same time, retaining the intrinsic identity of Islamic art. We could pinpoint the recurring themes of Islamic art that were adopted or changed in each country; thus, showing the wide range of visual expression that represents the country's affection.
I am trying to show the similarities and differences of the specific patterns and colors in Islamic art that are used by different countries within different periods. I will show the evolution of the patterns and colors through time within a country and emphasize the key features that are prominent in each era. I will try to explain how did they come with such patterns and colors based on their culture.
I will use tiles, textiles, and glass to determine the specific differences between Islamic patterns and colors. Although, tiles are highly preferred since each country has consistency in making tile patterns as decorations in Islamic architecture.
