FRANK STELLA is a renowned artist in the field of minimalism. I chose a picture from his black painting series. This picture uses only black paint on a canvass. Art is something that is making an emotional stimulus to human beings. It is up to the viewer to make a meaning of symbols that they see. In this picture, we can only see black paint and white lines that meet at a right angle. Visually there is nothing much to see, but this minimalism art can be extracted with much meaning.
The first color that we can analyze is black color. Black can be a symbol of many things. But for me, I think this symbolizes the void of the universe. The black color is the color of deepness and nothingness. This darkness is the only element to precede the first work of art, which is light. On this blackness, a viewer can see the symbols of grief and struggle. This blackness can symbolize the meaning of loss. As the dominant color in the art piece, it creates the general theme and mood of this minimalist painting.
Minimalist works of art provide minimal visual stimuli, but it evokes meaning and creates an upheaval of emotion in the viewer like no other. By only focusing on the key elements, the effect on the audience is magnified. Frank Stella’s method is another important element in the picture. The artist is equally important with the art piece. The creation is only an extension of the creator. Maybe, the process of creating this picture was relevant to the artist’s own life. Maybe it brought him to a meditative state that made him remember that beyond life is the void of death, something that his own consciousness might never grasp. The dominant blackness is contrasted by the white lines, the only detail in this picture.
The white lines in the picture are the only thing that can provide an object of focus for the viewer. These white lines greatly contrast with the black paint, but these white lines were not made of white paint, but merely the absence of black paint on the canvass. These white lines meet at right angles at three sides of the picture, but at the bottom, there are no white lines. The black extends until the limits of the canvass.
