Introduction
The use of the internet, computers, and technology, in general, has been adopted in the education systems, as evident in the transition from the learning methodologies that were non-technology-based to technology-based methods. The ultimate goal of education is to pass on knowledge and skills, nature competency, and morality and enhance capabilities. Many learning institutions across the globe have adopted information technology in running their affairs. Digital literacy is now becoming a requirement for teachers and tutors as many institutions are enrolling in long-distance learning programs that do not require the physical presence of students and teachers but still ensure class attendance and engagement.
Advantages of Internet
Online learning involves conducting classes and doing research via the internet. With the advancement of technology, learning can be done virtually through video calls, messaging, or webinars. This has created convenience, flexibility, and engagement for students, which has provided better correspondence during the learning process. The cost of education has become affordable as most learning tools are available on the internet at reasonable prices, if not free. Institutions have globalized and diversified; many students can learn or attend lectures from anywhere without being physically present. Easy and fast access to information and data from numerous sources has diversified knowledge and boosted interactivity. Constant access to and use of the internet and technology has enhanced digital literacy and innovation, which boosts the labor industry.
Limitations
As we acknowledge the benefits and impacts of technology in the education system, it is important to consider the disadvantages and limitations it brings with it. The availability of ready information prevents efficient learning as students can copy and paste information from internet sources; hence cheating becomes easy. Students become dependent on ready information, which hinders critical thinking and innovation; hence, applying knowledge in real-life situations becomes a challenge. Students need clarification and guidance from the numerous information available on internet sites. It is easy for students' attention to deviate to non-educational content on the internet. These distractions can lead to little study time or access to illicit content that could corrupt a student's mind. Internet use mostly requires immobility which has raised health concerns. Health problems resulting from a sedentary lifestyle, like obesity, sleeping disorders, and musculoskeletal problems, have been associated with students spending most of their time on the internet (Li et al., 2019). Physical activities and fields’ works have been abandoned over online research and video games. Easy accessibility to massive entertaining content has led to overindulgence and addiction to the internet.
