Computer Software and Systems Development (ITM306 Module 3 Case)

Essay Instructions:

The need of software programs in computers has led to several programming trends and initiatives. Among the most popular are in-house development, vendor development, and outsourcing. Vendor developed software dominates the market, and it sold through software licensing. Commercial developers spend time and money building state-of-the art applications, and they must protect their investment by copyright laws and software use. Software upgrades and versioning are also another way to sell valuable enhancements and software capabilities. Commercial vendors only sell the compiled code, keeping the source code away from the client. Shareware, open source, and freeware are also in style to decrease software cost and to tap on end-user development and user group development collaboration. All of these initiatives have provided plenty of opportunities for software selection. The most current offering is bundled cloud computing software, which not only provides solutions to hardware but also to application software.
The course materials in this module review a comprehensive list of software concepts as well as advances for developing effective global information systems.

Case Assignment
Identify and discuss a software package that you are familiar with either at work or for personal use.
Explain what the software is and how it is used.
Briefly describe the advantages and disadvantages of the software.
Does it reside on a local computer, or is it Web-based?
Can the software easily be used via a mobile device? Is this even necessary?
Is the human-computer interface intuitive, or does it require extensive training?
Is there training support from your organization or the vendor?
Is there a means to report and correct problems?
How would this software help you in a present or future job situation?
Does the software directly match the business process it supports, or is there a gap between the process and the software? In other words, do people need to use other tools, or can the process be executed completely within the software? Why?
What recommendations would you provide to improve the software you have used?
Your paper should be short (3–4 pages, not including cover sheet and references) and to the point. It is to be structured as a point/counterpoint argument, in the following manner.
Assignment Expectations
You are expected to:
Begin this paper by stating your position on these questions clearly and concisely
Cite appropriate sources and answer questions directly. Be sure to make the most effective case you can. Then present the best evidence you can, again citing three appropriate outside sources.
You will be particularly assessed on:
Your ability to see what the module is all about and to structure your paper accordingly.
Your informed commentary and analysis—simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper.
Your ability to apply the professional language and terminology of systems design and analysis correctly and in context; you are expected to be familiar with this language and use it appropriately.

Computer Software and Systems Development
In this paper, a software package is identified and discussed exhaustively. The identified software is Cloud Computing and is one that I am familiar with at the place of work. The Cloud computing software enables the company to utilize computing resources as a utility – similar to how electricity and water are consumed – instead of having to put up and maintain computing infrastructures within the organization in-house. The use of this software provides a number of benefits for the company and end-users. Some of the benefits are as follows: elasticity – the company is able to scale down as computing needs reduce and scale up as the demands go up. Self-service provisioning – the users are able to spin up computing resources for virtually all types of workload on-demand; and pay per use – the computing resources are assessed at a granular level, which allows the end-users to only pay for the workloads and resources they utilize (Griffith, 2014).
The software actually resides in the web; it is web-based software. With cloud computing, the end-users store and access programs and data over the internet and not on their hard drive. It is a kind of computing which is dependent on sharing computing resources instead of having personal devices or local servers to handle the applications (Forrester Research, 2008). On the whole, Cloud computing transforms how users interact with their applications and data. Rather than being stored on network servers or local hard drivers, applications and data are stored on a remote host which could be accessed from any location at any time with the use of a simple web browser and the internet (Laudon & Laudon, 2012).
The software can be utilized via a mobile device when used as Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). MCC basically refers to the mixture of wireless networks, mobile computing and cloud computing in order to bring rich computational resources not just to cloud computing providers and network operators, but also to mobile users. The main objective of Mobile Cloud Computing is essentially to allow execution of rich mobile applications on various mobile devices such as mobile phones, iPads, and smartphones, with a rich user experience (Gallaugher, 2012). Using the Cloud computing software via a mobile device is necessary considering that very many people today own a smartphone – although even more people still use a feature phone, which are lower-end phones – and these phones have capable built-in web browsers which could be used to access Cloud computing services.
Human-computer interface is not intuitive given that some training is required for the users. Cloud computing allows a company to acquire support and operation capabilities for Information Technology infrastructure, applications and platforms, without the need for its employees to acquire the corresponding specialist support and operation skills. This could significantly reduce the amount of time that is required to deploy these capabilities. In essence, the ability of an organization to acquire capabilities with no need for training is very important...
