Capacity Planning and Performance Modelling

Up to now, you’ve been working with simulations that you at least had some tangible connection to. But in fact, a lot of simulation gets done for you by other people who then tell you about it. Here’s an interesting example of a fairly simple (although somewhat complexly described) simulation regarding computing capacity:

You should review this report at least in general terms (you don’t need to try to parse out all the tables and detailed data. Concentrate on the problem, on the inputs to the simulation, and the outputs.

When you’ve got a reasonable feel for what was done and what was found out, prepare a 2- to 3-page paper discussing the following issues:

• What is your overall evaluation of the simulation, both in terms of its utility and its quality?
• Are there any particular changes that you might have suggested to the study authors that you feel would have improved the study?
• Do a bit of Internet research into so-called “queuing simulations.” What are some other areas in which this sort of simulation has been used?
• Overall, how do you feel about reading about a simulation as opposed to actually experiencing it hands-on?

SLP Assignment Expectations

Your paper should be two to three pages in length and reflect your personal experiences with this issue. The important part of the project assignments is to carefully assess your own experiences with the topic, and then reflect critically on what you have learned about yourself and about situations through this assessment process.

The more that you can use the exercise to develop personal implications for your growth as a potential business person as well as a moral individual, the more value you'll get out of the exercise.

Your paper will be evaluated on the following criteria:

• Precision: Carry out the exercise as assigned, or carefully explain the limitations that might have prevented your completing some parts. (Running out of time isn’t generally considered an adequate limitation.)
• Clarity: Provide clear answers that show good understanding of the topic.
• Breadth and depth: Make the scope of your paper relate directly to the questions of the assignment and the learning outcomes of the module.
• Critical thinking: Incorporate your reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business in a way that illustrates your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts.
