Objectives


Upon successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to



  • identify what Aristotle taught about leisure,

  • compare and contrast two major philosophical perspectives on leisure,

  • distinguish between a modern and a classical definition of leisure,

  • define how leisure relates to well-being/happiness,

  • define how philosopher Josef Pieper interpreted Aristotle, and

  • generate arguments in a logical and analytic style of thinking.


 Description


Students are to write a short essay to address the following:


According to Josef Pieper, how does the classical idea of leisure, found in Aristotle, differ from the modern idea of leisure? Present and incorporate also at least one point from the other readings on leisure as offered in Unit 1 and/or Unit 2 and/or Unit 3.


Instructions



  1. Prepare a persuasive essay to develop your particular approach to answering the question, establish your arguments, provide support for these arguments (both from the assigned readings and external sources), and summarize in a conclusion.

  2. Format the paper using APA style, double spaced, with appropriate headings, and a title page and reference page.

  3. The essay should be approximately 1100 words (+/-100 words, excluding title and reference pages).

  4. A minimum of 4 references should be included, and should follow APA referencing style. Please use the readings and links found in the course units as your sources for this essay. You can use the textbook, any of the library articles or any of the other linked readings.

This second stage will determine which texts or articles you will use to support your argument(s). You will be required to submit, on its own, a basic bibliography of at least four references you will use, with one or two sentences for each describing how it will bolster your argument(s).  You should use sources from the unit readings; any additional source materials you wish to introduce will need to be vetted by the professor via this stage.  Part 3: FINAL ESSAY SUBMISSION

The term leisure has been defined by many. It has been a topic that many have argued on how to achieve. Some considered this as a human activity wherein one can rest and relax. Several sayings and quotes shows the significance of this activity and how it should be spent. In general, leisure is interpreted as a time spent when a person does not have any obligatory activities. It is considered as a recreational activity where one can is free from compulsory duties and obligations. In this society, most people struggle to have leisure in their time. But how is leisure should be interpreted? How does the approach of leisure affect the society nowadays?
Aristotle once stated, “Just as we make war in order to have peace, the reason we labor is to have leisure”. It may sound simple but it depicts here an important feature of leisure. However, the classical view of leisure by Aristotle has been misunderstood and misinterpreted by many in several ways due to its complexity. Aristotle viewed leisure as the highest order activity and to improve leisure’s quality, re-educating the public and redesigning the process of delivery is done by social reformers who were recreation professionals. It is not just merely an absence of work, but a way of being that involves virtues, education, and material means to these. Being in leisure doesn’t require any kind of mental labor since it would simply come without efforts.
Several authors have used Aristotelian view of leisure as a basis and guide in improving the classical definition of leisure and one of them is Josef Pieper, a German philosopher. He presented an issue regarding leisure wherein most people are working that leisure has been lost. The society has trained the people to think and move in way that despite having a time for leisure, time won’t be spent for getting back in touch for oneself. The society has transformed every activity of human as work. People are too busy rebuilding a shattered society that there’s no enough time left for leisure. According to this philosopher, to build a stronger society, leisure should be incorporated for doing so.
Leisure has been highlighted by philosophers of the ancient and medieval times. This is, however, in contrary to how people emphasize work in the contemporary period. In this modern period, people work day and night and paycheck to paycheck to survive and live, and at the same time, is living just to work. But for the philosophers of the ancient times, such as Aristotle, one should work in order to achieve leisure. Both work and leisure influenced one’s life for contemplation.
