Week 3: Interpersonal Dynamics within Families

In addition to examining the role of families in society, and the conflicts families might have with other social institutions, sociologists also consider the various relationships within families, which in themselves may foster conflict or stability.  People may take love, commitment, and caring for granted, but from a sociological perspective, these phenomena are socially constructed and might not be viewed the same within and across families

This week, we will be examining the relationships among family members and how they are connected to the experience of well-being.

Objectives

Compare the ways in which people become involved in loving partnerships

Describe the various roles in family relationships

Understand the connection between family relationships and well-being

Week 3 Discussion: Reflecting on Relationship Research

Review this week’s Learning Resources and reflect on a couple that you know well (do not use their real names). In your post, please identify at least 2 ways that the research and ideas on relationships align with this couple that you know well. In other words, explain what the research findings state and how this couple’s experience is similar to these findings.

Then, identify at least 1 way that this research does not align with your chosen couple. Again here, explain what the research finding states and then how the couple’s experience does not reflect this finding.

Finally, reflect on these points you described with respect to sociological research.  Do you think that research on couples is helpful? If so, how can such research be used, and if not, why not?  Is there a way to make sociological research more helpful?
