Hunger is a major humanitarian problem in South Sudan. It is quite ironic to note that South Sudan is rich in various resources from timber to oil and gold, but still wallows in poverty due to a combination of factors. Most of these factors are self-made or self-inflicted. The country has endured a long, painful and bloody civil war that led to its formation. The civil war then turned into tribal warfare amongst the leading tribes in the country, once the country had been granted independence from the larger Sudan. The main bone of contention has always been, the larger Dinka community taking the lion’s share of government at the expense of the other ethnic groups; and yet most of the resources in the country are in the territories occupied by these ‘other’ groups.
