African American Struggle for Justice
African Americans have struggled in the United States of America for centuries. The struggle ranges from the issue of slavery moving through fights and movements to achieving equality. Even though today there is equality in races, there are still silent actions that show African Americans are being mistreated, such as police using extra-judicial forces on African Americans and killing them, such as the case of George Floyd, who was killed by police because they used excessive force when arresting him. The journey from slavery to equality has been a long and challenging journey that the presence of significant legislative changes has marked. Furthermore, social movements have been instrumental in propelling the journey, and an overview is presented in subsequent discussions.
In the period 1865 to 1877, there was an end to slavery and reconstruction. The Civil War that was presented ended with an Emancipation Proclamation that was in 1863. In the Emancipation process, all the enslaved people who were in Confederate states were considered free, meaning there was a successful fight against slavery (Nieman, 2020).
