Social Gerontology: Phases
Phase 1: Description of the Older Person
F.S., the participant, is a 68-year-old female. She is an educated woman who studied from nursery up to college and gained a bachelor’s degree. Her family was in lower-middle-class; that is why she had to work from middle school up to college. In middle school, F.S. worked as a nanny of their neighbour during weekends, and she uses the money she earns for her school projects and allowance. In high school, she applied in a local grocery store in their neighbourhood while in college, she worked parttime every after class as a barista. She did not have to leave work because she got support from her elder brother and sister.
Despite having to work hard for a living, F.S. also enjoyed her youth by participating in school events such as school programs, immersions, and of course, the prom. She goes out with her friends at least once a week during weekends. They often go to a picnic in a nearby forest where they hang out near the falls. Sometimes, they camp overnight and play the guitar and sing while warming themselves at the bonfire. She also liked to watch a movie with her friends, whether at the cinema or home, now and then.
For her, a school is just an option. Nevertheless, she enrolled because she believed that a degree would alleviate her means of living. After all, that is what her parents did not have. She thought that she could have a better chance in life if she became more educated and sophisticated. When she compared the leisure activities now and then, she thinks that they are quite the same except for the fact that the children of today indulge themselves so much on social media while during their time, they spent the whole day talking and knowing each other or playing games with one another.
Weddings and holidays were celebrated just the same comparing then and now. The main difference lies with the use of technology and the way people dress. During her time, there were no enough resources, and clean water is scarce. Hence, they do not smell good. Also, she noticed that people now prefer a lowkey wedding rather than a big one like how it used to be before, where everyone in the neighbourhood is invited. The dresses of today are sophisticated, and women show more of their skin than before.
Holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas, and New Year, are all celebrated the same way then and now. Despite having just enough, they invite, or they get invited every year to spent these days with their family, friends, or neighbours. These are the times of the year that serve as days-off after a long time spent working.
As mentioned above, she worked from middle school up to college. Despite earning on her own, she stayed at her parent’s house even in college because she only studied at a community college. She never left them not because her parents did not want to, but because she wanted to take care of them while her siblings are away.
F.S. graduated with a degree in economics and with her efforts, she became a professor at a college. Because of this ideal position, she started earning more than enough for her daily needs. However, before earning th...
